Walmart Global Tech appoints Balu Chaturvedula as its India head

Walmart Global Tech, the technology arm of retail giant Walmart, has announced a new leadership change in its India operations. Balu Chaturvedula, who was previously the vice-president of supply chain technology for Walmart’s US Omni Tech organization, has been appointed as the new country head for India. He succeeds Hari Vasudev, who will move to a global role in Bentonville, Arkansas, as executive vice president of global tech platforms.

    Who is Balu Chaturvedula?

Balu Chaturvedula is a seasoned technologist and leader with nearly three decades of experience in the tech industry. He joined Walmart in 2015 and played a vital role in building the fulfillment technology that focused on delivering a flawless customer experience while reducing costs. He has also been deeply invested in growing and leading teams that consistently deliver compelling results and nurturing the supply chain talent in India.

Prior to Walmart, Balu has worked with organizations such as HP, Yahoo! and Motorola. He holds an engineering degree from the University of Madras and an executive management degree from UC Berkeley.

What will be his role and responsibilities?

As the country head for India, Balu will be responsible for leading Walmart Global Tech’s vision in India—driving a culture of innovation and supporting the delivery of seamless and delightful experiences for Walmart’s customers, members, and associates. He will also oversee the development and execution of technology solutions that enable Walmart to offer best-in-class omnichannel retail across its markets.

“We are pleased to welcome Balu in his new role as Walmart Global Tech’s Country Head in India. Balu’s vast technical expertise and tenure as a Walmart leader will immensely benefit our efforts as a people-led, tech-powered omnichannel retailer,” said Suresh Kumar, executive vice president, global chief technology officer, and chief development officer, Walmart Inc.

    Why is this appointment significant?

This appointment reflects Walmart’s commitment to strengthening its technology capabilities and presence in India, which is one of the fastest-growing and most dynamic retail markets in the world. Walmart Global Tech India has been operating since 2008 and has more than 6,000 associates across Bengaluru and Chennai. The team works on cutting-edge technologies such as cloud computing, machine learning, data science, artificial intelligence, and blockchain to create innovative solutions for Walmart’s global businesses.

Walmart Global Tech India also collaborates with other entities within the Walmart ecosystem, such as Flipkart, PhonePe, Myntra, and Ninjacart, to leverage synergies and create value for customers and stakeholders.

With Balu at the helm, Walmart Global Tech India is poised to continue its journey of excellence and innovation in the retail technology space.
