Squid Game Season 2 and 3: What We Know So Far

Squid Game, the hit dystopian drama that became Netflix’s most-watched show of all time, has left fans eagerly waiting for more. The show, which follows a group of people who participate in a deadly survival game for a chance to win billions of won, ended with a cliffhanger that hinted at a possible continuation. But when can we expect to see Squid Game Season 2 and 3 on our screens?

    Netflix’s Response

According to some media reports, Netflix is planning to film the second and the third season of Squid Game simultaneously, with both seasons having 13 episodes in total. The filming for the second season is reportedly scheduled to begin in July this year. However, Netflix has not officially confirmed these details and has stated that they are still in the early stages of planning for Season 2. In a statement, Netflix said:

In order to create a show that will bring the fans joy, the ‘Squid Game’ production team is giving their all to prepare for Season 2. Because we are still in the early stages [of planning], the concrete details have not yet been decided.

    The Cast

It is likely that Lee Jung Jae, who played the role of Seong Gihun, the main protagonist and the winner of the first game, will return for the next seasons. Lee has confirmed that he will be appearing in Season 2 and will start filming soon. He also hinted that his character will have a different motivation and goal in the sequel.

Another actor who is expected to reprise his role is Lee Byung Hun, who played The Front Man (or Hwang In Ho), the mysterious leader of the game who turned out to be Gihun’s childhood friend and former game participant. Lee has also confirmed that he will be back for Season 2 and will begin shooting soon.

Other cast members who may return include Oh Young Soo as Oh Il Nam, the elderly player who was revealed to be the mastermind behind the game; Wi Ha Joon as Hwang Jun Ho, a police officer who infiltrated the game to find his missing brother; and Jung Ho Yeon as Kang Sae Byeok, a North Korean defector who befriended Gihun but died in the final game.

    The Plot

The plot of Squid Game Season 2 and 3 is still unknown, but we can expect some clues from the creator of the show, Hwang Dong Hyuk. Hwang has previously said that he was “in talks” with Netflix for another two seasons and that he had some ideas for how to continue the story. He also said that Season 2 will follow Gihun’s journey after winning the game and his decision to stop his flight to Los Angeles and confront The Front Man over the phone.

Hwang also teased some possible elements that may appear in Season 2, such as:

The man in the suit with ddakji (a folded paper toy), who recruited Gihun for the game and appeared again at the end of Season 1.

Young Hee’s boyfriend Cheol Su, who was mentioned by Sae Byeok as her reason for joining the game.

The origin and purpose of the game and its connection to other countries.

    The Release Date

There is no official release date for Squid Game Season 2 and 3 yet, but we can make some guesses based on Netflix’s usual production schedule. If the filming for Season 2 starts in July this year as reported, it may take several months to complete, followed by post-production and marketing. Therefore, we may not see Squid Game Season 2 until late 2023 or early 2024. As for Season 3, it may depend on how well Season 2 performs and whether Netflix decides to renew it or not.

    The Conclusion

Squid Game Season 2 and 3 are still in development and have not been officially announced by Netflix yet. However, based on some media reports and statements from the cast and crew, we can expect that the second and third season will be filmed simultaneously and will continue Gihun’s story after winning the game. We may also see some new characters and revelations about the game and its origin. However, we will have to wait for a long time before we can watch Squid Game Season 2 and 3 on Netflix.
