BTS 10th Anniversary: Global Superstars yet South Korea made no exception for Army service

BTS, the K-pop sensation that has taken the world by storm, is celebrating its 10th anniversary of debut on June 13, 2023. The group, composed of RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook, has achieved unprecedented success and recognition in the global music industry, breaking records and barriers with their catchy songs, powerful performances and positive messages.

However, despite their immense popularity and influence, BTS has not been exempted from the mandatory military service that all able-bodied South Korean men have to fulfill. The group’s oldest member, Jin, enlisted in December 2022 and is expected to be discharged in June 2024. J-Hope followed suit in March 2023 and will return in September 2024. The rest of the members will also have to enlist in the coming years, according to their birth dates.

This has raised some questions and debates among fans and the public about whether BTS deserves special treatment or exemption from the military service, given their contributions to the country’s culture, economy and diplomacy. Some argue that BTS should be recognized as national treasures and be allowed to continue their musical careers without interruption. Others contend that BTS should abide by the same rules as other citizens and serve their country with honor and duty.

The South Korean government has not made any exception for BTS so far, despite revising the Military Service Act in 2020 to allow some athletes and artists who have won international awards to postpone their enlistment until the age of 30. BTS does not qualify for this benefit because their awards are not considered as official by the Ministry of National Defense.

However, the government has also expressed its appreciation and support for BTS and their fans, known as ARMY. President Moon Jae-in personally congratulated the group for their achievements and praised them as “the pride of Korea”. He also sent a special message to Jin and J-Hope on their enlistment day, thanking them for their service and wishing them well.

BTS themselves have also shown their respect and gratitude for the military service and their fans. They have repeatedly stated that they are ready to serve when the time comes and that they will do their best to fulfill their duty. They have also assured their fans that they will not stop making music and that they will always be together with them.

On their 10th anniversary, BTS released a new song titled “Take Two”, which expresses their love and commitment to their fans and their music. They also shared heartfelt letters and videos on social media, reflecting on their journey so far and promising a better future ahead. They also announced a special festival in Seoul on June 17, which will turn the whole city purple, their signature color.

BTS is a group that has overcome many challenges and hardships to reach where they are today. They have inspired millions of people around the world with their passion, talent and sincerity. They have also represented South Korea with pride and dignity on the global stage. They have proven that they are not only global superstars but also responsible citizens who are willing to serve their country when needed.

As they celebrate their 10th anniversary, we wish them all the best and hope that they will continue to shine bright like stars for many more years to come.
